What Got You Here Won't Get You There

The manufacturing specialist who built a kickass career in the 1990s...and has been struggling for 20 years to get back what no longer exists.

The sales hotshot who used to be able to fill a pipeline with masterful cold calls...and doesn't accept that today's buyers have control over the info they gather pre-purchase and when or even if they'll connect with a real live salesperson.

The seasoned marketing executive who launched a career before email marketing was a thing. And still hopes to rely on hiring up-and-coming team members to explain emerging technologies, rather than engage directly in them.

What got you here won't get you to where you want to go.

It doesn't matter where you are or where you want to go. Even if what you want to do is to just stand still. The rest of the world will never stand still. You can't force it to, and you definitely can't force it backward.

The only real choice we have is to move along with the world. To evolve with the world.

That might mean taking a fresh look at your brand and your business on a regular basis -- through the lens of your buyers' ever-changing lives. It might mean taking stock of your work life to ask yourself if you're doing new things, engaging in new practices, recognizing the external forces that are changing your marketplace...or just treading water on past successes, existing knowledge, and the way business has 'always' been done (of course 'always' is a short-sighted illusion).

Where do you want to go in 2017? Are you planning on getting there by doing what you did this year?
